Art Academy East offers a range of structured courses designed to promote independent creativity in students and a strong design focus for learners. As a centre for the Art in mid-Norfolk we aim to break down the barriers of learning and provide achievable, skills based courses with a strong foundation in technical ability.

Study with AAE has a strong traditional focus. Skills are taught as fundamental building blocks, colour mixing and the use of a reduced colour palette, the importance and effective use of tonal values, design and composition, brushwork, paint handling and emotive content. Step by step carefully designed programs of study that lead to technical excellence. Experienced painters and makers will find these neglected areas invaluable as they incorporate them into their practice. Fine art evolves continually and finding ways to use the traditional skills of the old masters in conjunction with experimental new ideas makes for exciting discoveries. We offer intensive tuition designed to meet the individual learners needs and goals.
An inspiring, creative centre for mid Norfolk

AAE offers dedicated studio space where creative learning comes easily. Currently the centre has two main teaching areas. The art room is flooded with light and houses a gallery area where students can showcase their work. Art materials are available on site with advice on what to use and how. You will find us situated off the main High Street in the middle of Dereham. The centre is easily reached by bus or car and free parking is nearby.

Do I need qualifications to join a course?

There are no formal entry requirements for creative courses at AAE and tutors will discuss suitability with you. Learners wishing to study will need to show some prior learning within art or have practised as a hobby but the main requirement is an interest in the arts and a willingness to undertake the practise and research needed.

How will my work be assessed?

Assessments are made regularly throughout the courses, with verbal and written feedback offered in a positive way. Coursework is assessed by the tutor, checked termly by an Internal Verifier from College of West Anglia and final submissions are verified by an appointed External Verifier at the end of the course. Help and encouragement is offered at every stage from our experienced tutors.
